Amagwinya also known as "Vetkoek" is a delightful Zulu snack commonly enjoyed with cheese, polony, mince etc...
Place all your dry ingredients in your mixing bowl and mix together well : flour, sugar, yeast and salt.
Add water and 2 tablespoons of oil and mix well. You may use a mixer if you do not have one your hands will do just fine. After mixing you dough should be sticky.
Cover your dough with a cloth and let rise for 45 mins. (Place in sun for best results).
Your dough should have doubled in size by now. Knead your dough one more time and let it rest for another 15 mins.
Heat up your oil at a medium temperature. Make sure you put enough oil to allow for deep frying.
Separate your dough into balls and fry until golden brown. Approximately 10 mins.
Serve and enjoy!

I tried these today and they were a hit absolutely loved them tweaked the recipe a bit cause sugar was a bit too much but overall they are a fantastic treat thank u sisi
Thanks for the feedback and you’re welcome Miranda.
Please help my magwinyas have oil inside they aren’t as dry as they should be inside
Sorry to hear that Tshepi, your vetkoek had oil inside them because your oil wasn’t hot enough. Test your oil by dropping a small amount of batter and if it floats then your oil is ready. Your vetkoek should float while they’re cooking if not then something is wrong.

Hey there, I’m not familiar with that recipe, but will definitely look into it and get back to you.
My grandma made exactly the same amagwinya but couldn’t tell us the recipe coz she just added the ingredients the old style, I’m so happy I can finally make the same..

You’re welcome Phelelami, well done.
I made them and they’re so delicious. Crispy on the outside and soft on the inside just the way I love them. Perfect!
Glad you loved them Neo.
Why is it a Zulu snack, it’s an SA snack
Because* who came up with the snack in the first place the zulu’s I see it as a compliment come on now why must everything be taken personal…
How do you know it’s Zulu people who came up with it when it’s literally eaten across tribes and Africa? African/South African is more accurate lol
You’re absolutely right, Nozi.
Coz its a Zulu snack tf
Well actually you’re right, it’s more of a South African snack.
You have made my day so far.
Thank you.
You’re welcome Thabiso.
Can I use baking powder instead of yeast?
Personally I’ve never tried it before but you can try googling some Amagwinya/Vetkoek recipes that uses baking powder. Let me know how it goes.
Baking powder won’t allow it to raise as much as yeast would.
Thanks for the feedback Bongiwe.
I also need to try making Amagwinya but am not good at anything to do with flour. Can someone be kind enough to at least show me in Video form how to make them. I really want to follow the action Thank you
I will be making instructional videos soon, keep a look out in my site.
THANK YOU FOR THIS I WILL MADE IT NOW
Goodluck Mr July, hope it goes well.
